The BAT looks more like an extra in the Speed Racer movie than a real car, but it is somewhat significant for a couple of reasons. For one, the sculptured body was formed over the Alfa Romeo Competizione platform, which is scheduled to mark Alfa’s return to the U.S. market in 2011. Also, the Stile Bertone machine is one of the first independently designed concepts to be displayed on the main floor of COBO Hall. The BAT 11 is based on the Bertone-designed Alfa BATs, a.k.a., Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica (Aerodynamic Technical Coupes), of the 1950’s. The BAT 11 was originally scheduled to debut at the Geneva Auto Show last March, but due to some extenuating circumstances, it actually was shown at a private party near the show. It then made its U.S. debut at the Pebble Beach Concourse show last August. Financed by dentist Gary Kaberle, the BAT 11 is showing up in a bunch of high-profile places.
