Last year we profiled the Lincoln MKT concept that debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, and this year we were able to drive the real thing. You will notice the production and concept version are similar in appearance—that’s both good and not so good. Good because like on other Ford products, the small details shine through. The accents of chrome, nice paint, and good fit and finish gives you the impression this is a quality piece of machinery. Not so good because the production MKT draws mixed subjective reviews. If you were to remove the taillight and replace it with one big, round headlight, the back of it would look like an old ’50s diesel locomotive coming at you. It has a bulbous booty. The grille tends to polarize as well, with a tall, evil chrome grin that could be dangerous to those with weak hearts when they see it in their rearview mirror. The MKT isn’t nearly as scary on the inside, with a beautiful, well-appointed interior and enough options to satisfy even the most ardent technophile. It runs well too, especially with the 355-hp, 3.5-liter “EcoBoost” V6 that has the same twin-turbo setup that can also be found on the 2010 Taurus SHO. There’s also a 3.7-liter, 270-hp V6 available standard with front- or all-wheel-drive.
