This dolled up beauty with its additional chrome, color matching body trim, upgraded interior and more will go into production this summer.

Unlike your high school prom date there is substance to this beauty. To meet the power needs of the commercial truck customer, the 2011 model has two improved engine choices available; the 6.6L Duramax rated at 397 HP with 765 lb. ft of torque or the Vortec 6.0L V8 rated at 360 HP. According to GMC both are best in class for power, with improved fuel economy and the ability of the Duramax to run on B20 biodiesel, but with all things pickup trucks that might last a year. The engines are mated to the Allison 1000 6-speed for the Duramax and the 6L90 6-speed automatic for the gas V8. In addition to power, a truck buyer needs bragging rights on capacities. To meet that need the Sierra Denali delivers with up to 16,000 lb. conventional towing capacity and 6,335 lb. payload capacity. As time goes on, The Truck Blue Book hopes to put the 2011 GMC Sierra Denali HD to the test. As we get more information, we’ll pass it along to our readers.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/3/15/the-april-edition-of-the-truck-blue-book-is-available-to-ord.html"><rss:title>THE APRIL EDITION OF THE TRUCK BLUE BOOK IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/3/15/the-april-edition-of-the-truck-blue-book-is-available-to-ord.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>The Truck Blue Book Truck Blue Book</dc:subject>

Since 1933, few business tools have delivered as consistently as The Truck Blue Book®. Ford provided a tortuous environment in and around a working rock quarry to showcase the new trucks capabilities.

Included in the program was a 24000# trailer tow test up a mountain, a head to head drag race competition with each truck pulling an 84,000# Caterpillar front end loader, a competition relating to the new Live Drive PTO, as well as an off-road course climbing large rocks ascending and descending 20 degree hills which tested the limits of the drivers and passengers more than any limit of the trucks. The day finished with an 84 mile fuel economy run that was won by some hypermiling engineers averaging 34 miles per gallon with 1000 pounds of concrete bags in the bed. Without resorting to turning the engine off down hills or other non real-world driving techniques we averaged a respectable 24.1 mpg. The mileage course included driving dirt roads, forging ponds, stopping for school buses and merging with highway speed traffic to our final destination.

The heart of these next generation trucks are the all-new 6.7 liter diesel and 6.2 liter gas engines matched to a new heavy duty TorqShift™ six-speed transmission. When I hear the words “All-New” I cringe a little because we are bombarded every day by marketing hype extolling virtues of ALL-NEW products which are most often times merely the same old thing with an all-new color. However, all-new is an accurate description when discussing the 6.7L Power Stroke as this is a clean-sheet engine. As opposed to the previous Power Stroke, this was engineered, tested and built by Ford. They targeted attributes important to buyers of these type trucks and came away with a design that increased fuel economy by 18% while increasing horsepower by 11% and torque by 12%. There were no decibel numbers provided, however, the sound quality is largely improved and until I drove a competitive diesel truck up the mountain didn’t really appreciate how quiet these new Ford trucks really are.

One of the most striking visuals at the rock quarry was seeing an 8100# rock strapped on a new Dodge sitting on top of a fifth wheel trailer being towed by an F-550. The Dodge was at maximum capacity with the truck, rock and bed alone.

One of the things we learned at the pre-drive pep talk is the Super Duty market is a “Business of Niches”. The marketing and engineering folks spend a lot of time listening to their divergent group of Super Duty customers. Because 97% of Super Duty customers tow, a lot of effort was put into meeting the needs of towing customers. There is now a factory installed fifth wheel and gooseneck mounting. Even us desk jockeys were able to switch from a gooseneck ball hitch to fifth wheel plate in a couple minutes. An F-350 with the hill holding feature, Trailer Sway Control, engine exhaust braking and hill descent control enabled me to tow a trailer loaded with some 22,000# of stuff up and down a mountain, not a hill, but a mountain with maybe a 1000 foot drop to the level ground below. I never felt that I wasn’t in complete control of the trailer until I drove a competitive truck with a smaller load at much lower speeds up and down the same mountain.

Beyond towing and payload capacity, fleet customers have asked for fuel efficiency, lockable storage and technology that helps improve productivity. Everything is about maximizing productivity. We all have to do more with less these days. Fuel efficiency is improved 18%, there is 5’ of lockable storage under the rear seat and productivity enhancing technology is abundant.

There are some very useful productivity improving electronics including a built-in computer with internet access from Sprint™, GPS from Garmin™, Tool Link™ from DeWalt® and Crew Chief™ from microlise®. These are heavy hitters in their respective industries and to do their systems justice you need to access www.fordworksolutions.com. Suffice it to say, the systems are well integrated and simple to use.

I have to come clean and admit I hit the reset button on a fuel economy competition for the Ford Fusion hybrid last year and won with 52.8 mpg. Without the reset I would probably have gotten only 52 mpg. The F-series “Crew Chief” is GPS centric and this fuel economy challenge was monitored by way of the Internet and did not allow me to reset my figures.

The Crew Chief™ feature allows the fleet manager to monitor the activities of the driver. This is powerful stuff. Those employees stopping at the bar, girl friend’s house or sleeping on the job on a side street will now have to explain their activities. Knowing that the people writing their checks can monitor their whereabouts could change their habits.

While the management of the competition to Ford Super Duty trucks play musical chairs, Ford has been able to focus on the needs of their customers. For 33 years truck customers have voted with their dollars and have elected the F-Series as the most popular truck. Ford has just raised the bar again as they continue to engineer their F-series trucks to meet or exceed their divergent customer needs.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/3/3/the-april-edition-of-the-older-automobile-red-book-is-availa.html"><rss:title>THE APRIL EDITION OF THE OLDER AUTOMOBILE RED BOOK IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/3/3/the-april-edition-of-the-older-automobile-red-book-is-availa.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Automobile Red Book</dc:subject>

The Older Automobile Red BookTM covers the previous eleven years of automobile/light truck identification with high/low values offering the most complete listing of older vehicles available. O’Connor, both of whom kept us from getting lost, told us there were no such things as dumb questions (and answered them—even if they really were dumb!), and made sure we stayed safe even when we weren’t paying attention.

So now, it’s back to the normal routine for Price Digests employees. But we came from our tour with a new appreciation for the cars and trucks we deal with everyday.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/22/the-april-edition-of-the-automobile-red-book-is-available-to.html"><rss:title>THE APRIL EDITION OF THE AUTOMOBILE RED BOOK IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/22/the-april-edition-of-the-automobile-red-book-is-available-to.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Automobile Red Book</dc:subject>

Since 1911, The Automobile Red BookTM has been providing automotive professionals with detailed comprehensive valuation and identification information.

Here’s a quick look at what has been happening, and the impact it may have on prices of used Toyotas.

You may recall that in November, the world’s largest automaker recalled 4.2 million vehicles because, they claimed, floor mats were bunching up around the accelerator pedal and causing unintended acceleration. The “fix” for this was either to put the mat in the trunk, or the dealer would essentially anchor it with a tie strap.

Then in January, the NHTSA began probing Toyota regarding their actions toward safety issues in general. Soon after, Toyota announced that the accelerator pedals in eight of their popular models had a defect that could make them stick. Action was taken this time. Was it ever. Toyota recalled another 2.3-million vehicles to fix the sticky pedals. They halted production on these models while the fix was engineered. And the NHTSA ordered that all affected models not be sold at dealerships until the fix was installed.

This was big action on the part of Toyota and the NHTSA. And it brought about big media coverage. Everywhere you turned; there was a story about accidents and deaths allegedly attributed to these sticking pedals. Reports about the sticking pedal problem from as far back as 2007 began to surface. The NHTSA publicly questioned whether the problem was because of this mechanical defect, or if it was caused by Toyota’s electronic throttle control system. It wasn’t uncommon to see Toyota owners interviewed on the nightly news who expressed genuine concern over the safety of their vehicles.

Then if all this wasn’t enough, the Japanese government and NHTSA began investigating some 124 separate complaints about braking issues on Toyota Priuses. This prompted yet another recall of 500,000 Toyota and Lexus hybrid models to address a software update in the braking systems.

That’s not all. The NHTSA is also investigating complaints about steering problems in 2009 and 2010 Corollas that reportedly cause these vehicles to veer out of control.

Now that has to be the end of it, right? Wrong. Toyota recently recalled another 7,300 2010 Camrys because a power steering hose was touching a brake tube, which could cause a hole in the hose that could result in more braking problems. 7,300 cars may not seem like many, and any other time it might not even be news. But when the spotlight is shining this brightly on the issues of one company, every complaint is like another log on the fire.

So what, ultimately, is the issue here in the minds of consumers? Are these physical defects going to turn people away from Toyota showrooms? Maybe some. But eventually all of these issues will be corrected. And the fact is, the percentage of cars out of the millions sold that would even show a hint of these problems is so small that they would never even be a concern to most people.

The real issue here deals with trust. People had such an unrealistically high opinion of this company that now they feel let down. The more information that comes out about Toyota’s prior knowledge of the sticking pedal problem, for example, the more a cynical public wonders what else they may be hiding. This whole debacle is such a monstrous hit on Toyota’s lily white reputation that it is bound to impact sales of new cars for the near future.

The knee-jerk reaction by many analysts is that the values of used Toyotas are going to take a nosedive. In the short-term, that may prove to be true. But more realistically, the values of used Toyotas appear to be falling in-line with the competition.

Before all this, Toyota values had been climbing out of a recession-induced hole rather nicely. Think of it as a high-striker game at the carnival. The weight was traveling onward and upward after an impressive whack of the big hammer. But now, it doesn’t look like Toyota prices are going to hit that elusive bell at the top. All of these issues just sapped the kinetic energy from the rising values, and now the weight is hovering right in there with comparable vehicles from GM, Ford, et al.

Long term, we think Toyota will come out of this mess fairly unscathed. There are many people who have been virtually brainwashed on the idea that Toyota could do no wrong, and they’ll continue to buy them. All of these recalls and stories will pass, and some other issue du Jour will take their place. Aside from the minor inconvenience of having to participate in a recall, most Toyota owners aren’t going to be put out too seriously by any of this.

Of course, time will tell. If more issues come to light, if something else happens that Toyota knew about earlier, if Toyotas begin crashing on a more regular basis because of defects, values could take a more serious plunge. There are just some things that can’t be forecasted—who would have expected any of this?! As usual, the editors and staff at The Automobile Red Book are keeping an eye on all the latest Toyota news, and monitoring prices at auctions and other outlets. As the market adjusts, so will we—just as we have for nearly 100 years.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/10/auto-red-book-review-2010-hyundai-genesis-coupe.html"><rss:title>AUTO RED BOOK REVIEW: 2010 HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/10/auto-red-book-review-2010-hyundai-genesis-coupe.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe ARB On The Cover Automobile Red Book Coupe Hyundai</dc:subject>

On the Cover Review: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The Genesis Coupe is not Hyundai’s first foray into the sports coupe arena. Most people are familiar with the Tiburon, which actually seems to have a similar design philosophy as the Genesis Coupe. At first, the Tiburon had relatively good reviews, and some thought Hyundai had really turned a corner from their cheap commuter image. As it turns out, the Tiburon was OK, but it never really set the world on fire. Now, the Genesis is supposed to show that Hyundai has again turned a corner. This time, they supposedly benchmarked cars from the likes of BMW to make a world-class performance machine. Could be. It is nicer than Hyundais of the past (including the Tiburon), but it still comes off a little cheap compared to your bosses Bimmer. And that odd dip in the quarter window and the lemon-sucking nose treatment are a constant reminder that you’re driving something a bit different. Engines include a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 210-hp. There is also a 3.8-liter V6 that belches out a respectable 306-hp. The V8 from the Genesis sedan is not available thus far. The Genesis Coupe comes across as a decent performance value. Perhaps Hyundai really has turned a corner with this car. Only time will tell if it is a new corner, or just the same one they went around with the Tiburon.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/8/the-2010-grounds-maintenance-equipment-blue-book-is-availabl.html"><rss:title>THE 2010 GROUNDS MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT BLUE BOOK IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.pricedigests.com/price-digests/2010/2/8/the-2010-grounds-maintenance-equipment-blue-book-is-availabl.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Grounds Maintenance® Equipment Blue Book® is your guide to outdoor power equipment, which contains more than 700 pages of comparative specifications and valuation information for riding mowers, lawn and garden tractors, walk-behind mowers, compact/utility tractors, golf cars, snow throwers, rotary tillers, chain saws, edgers and trimmers, blowers and chippers/shredders.
